Wisconsin Notes, Quotes
SCOUTING THE OFFENSE: Wisconsin heads into its 12th bowl in 13 years bearing the Big Ten's top rushing offense with 212 yards per game. The Badgers boast a devastating tailback tandem in junior P.J. Hill and redshirt freshman John Clay, both of whom produced three 100-yard games in the last four weeks. They get to run behind a line laden with seniors intent on going out the right way. But QB Dustin Sherer, who started the final six games, has shown significant improvement as opponents try to force the Badgers to pass. He threw for 487 yards and two touchdowns in the final two regular-season games. WR David Gilreath, already a kick-return savant, became a special threat near the end of the year.
SCOUTING THE DEFENSE: There are veterans galore on Wisconsin's 4-3 unit, particularly in the front seven. While there are a few guys who remain from the Badgers' remarkable 2006 defense (DE Matt Shaughnessy, DT Jason Chapman, OLBs Jonathan Casillas and DeAndre Levy), this just isn't the same shutdown group. The Badgers allowed fewer than 20 points just one in the final seven weeks of the season, but still finished fourth in the league in total yards allowed (322.3 ypg).QUOTE TO NOTE: "No, I don't think anybody did. But that's the cards we got, so we played them." -- Wisconsin senior defensive end Matt Shaughnessy on the Badgers getting out of their four-year Capital One/Outback Bowl rut ... but not in the direction they had planned. |
