Tennessee Strategy and Personnel
PLAYERS TO WATCH IN 2009: SS Eric Berry -- A man who both teams game-plan around, Berry will be the defense's unquestioned leader and could see more time on offense because of his game-breaking speed. One more year like this one and he'll be on par with the program's all-time greats like Reggie White and Al Wilson.
DT Dan Williams -- If he doesn't opt out of his senior year, which he hinted could happen if he said advisors tell him he could realistically be a first or second round pick, Williams will give the defensive line a big-time anchor up front. He has the quick feet, plus the strength and technique, to constantly disrupt an opponent's offense.TB Lennon Creer -- He enjoyed a good November, showing the ability to run inside the tackles that some didn't think the speedster had. With Arian Foster's graduation, Creer and Montario Hardesty should battle for the starting job next year. PRO PROSPECTS: --WR Lucas Taylor fell off pretty dramatically this year, but he is just a year removed from catching 75 passes, so there has to be ability in his slender body. Taylor fell off the most after Erik Ainge's graduation, but has the moves and toughness to make someone's roster with a good training camp. --DE Robert Ayers could be a good second-day draft pick for a shrewd team which wants to take a chance on an edge rusher. Ayers enjoyed his best season in 2008, helping his value by willingly switching to tackle at times when the team was shorthanded due to injuries. --OG Anthony Parker, like the rest of the offensive line, didn't have the kind of year for which he was striving. But Parker was tabbed one of the nation's best offensive linemen in preseason for a reason. His good technique and strength could make him worth a draft pick, particularly for a team which needs to add depth to its O-line. ROSTER REPORT: --QB B.J. Coleman (ankle) didn't play against Kentucky after seeing most of the time at Vanderbilt. The wet, chilly weather probably had something to do with it, as did a rare efficient outing by Jonathan Crompton. --WR Gerald Jones is concerned about the offense learning its third system in as many years under a new coaching staff. Jones said studying the playbook and discipline would be a key in how the team handles the transition. |
