Alabama, Texas Tech still 1-2 in BCS

On Saturday, all the would-be title game contenders emerged victorious. On Sunday, those results were reflected in the relatively static BCS standings.

The top nine teams in last week's rankings were unchanged in this week's version, with Alabama and Texas Tech continuing to hold down the coveted top two spots in the standings.

The only change in the top 10? That would be Ohio State moving up one spot to No. 10, swapping places with Georgia.

Of course, this week should be another story, if only because several of the teams vying for spots in one of the five BCS bowls (including the title game) will face off against each other.

Foremost among those matchups is No. 2 Texas Tech's trip to Norman to take on No. 5 Oklahoma.

If the Red Raiders are able to emerge with the rare road victory over the Sooners, they will have cleared the toughest remaining hurdle between them and a spot in the title game. But if Oklahoma knocks Texas Tech from the ranks of the unbeaten, the likely result will be a three-way tie for first in the Big 12 South that will be broken by whichever team finishes the regular season ranked higher in the BCS standings.

While it's the biggest matchup of would-be BCS bowl teams, it's far from the only one.

No. 7 Penn State can clinch a spot in the Rose Bowl if the Nittany Lions can defeat No. 15 Michigan State. The Spartans, meanwhile, have their own aspirations of spending New Year's Eve in Pasadena. Of course they need a little help; Michigan State will earn a Rose Bowl bid with a win and an Ohio State loss to Michigan.

There's also a looming battle of BCS busters in the Mountain West conference. No. 7 Utah will be looking to complete a perfect regular season and lock up a BCS bid when it takes on in-state rival BYU. However, the No. 14 Cougars could make their own case for an at-large bid with a win over the Utes. Although it's possible that Boise State could get the nod over BYU even if the Cougars win on Saturday.

Last (and without meaning too much disrespect to the Big East, definitely least) is the game between No. 19 Cincinnati and No. 20 Pittsburgh that will go a long way toward determining what team will receive that conference's automatic BCS berth.

So while there wasn't much movement in the standings, it's a safe bet that the current calm is about to be replaced by a BCS storm.
