Rockies won't be able to deal Fuentes by deadline

If the Rockies want to trade closer Brian Fuentes, it will not be possible for them to do it before the September 1 deadline for setting postseason rosters.

The Rockies placed Fuentes on waivers Monday, but the pitcher went on the bereavement list on Tuesday, effectively canceling the waivers. Fuentes was reinstated from the bereavement list on Friday. If the Rockies again placed him on waivers then, he would not clear until after the Sunday deadline for postseason rosters.

Players who go on the bereavement list are similar to those who go on the disabled list, and cannot go through the waiver process. The minimum stay on the bereavement list is three days.

The Rockies were unlikely to trade Fuentes anyway for two reasons. First, they would have asked for a high price from any team that claimed him. Second, Colorado is only six games out in the NL West thanks to the recent struggles of the Diamondbacks and Dodgers.
