Being thankful in tough times

You know folks, Thanksgiving is a special time of year. We get to spend it with family and friends plus give thanks for all the blessings that we have in this country.

I know it's easy to be grateful when things are going well and running smoothly. But next year, it looks like it's going to be really tough both across the county and in racing. We are facing difficult times not only in this country but elsewhere in the world — there seem to be tremendous challenges all over the place.

I know it is hard during the tough times to see all the good we have in our lives, but we do have them and should be thankful. Thanksgiving offers the opportunity to pause, remember and reflect. We should turn our attention to the things that really matter like family, faith and health. Those are three things that are basis of what we are all about.

My wife Stevie and I are grateful for the many blessings in our life. We are so blessed to have two beautiful daughters, Jessica and Sarah, who are remarkable women. Jessica turned 21 this year and is doing great in college. Sarah turned 16, is doing great in school and is working on her acting career. We are going to have family and friends over because Thanksgiving is one of my all-time favorites of the year. It's great to have folks that love you, care about you and will pray for you on this special holiday.

Thanksgiving is a time of reflection and a chance to look back. Additionally it also gives us a chance to look forward.

One of the biggest things I am thankful for is the men and women of the United States Military across the globe that make the tremendous sacrifices so that we can continue to enjoy our freedom. These selfless individuals are the pride of the United States and we should all pray for them. We are so fortunate to have these men and women who are true patriots that are willing to give up their todays so we can have so many tomorrows. That's a wonderful blessing in this country that should never be taken lightly or forgotten.

I am thankful for you, the fans. You guys and gals truly are the best fans in the world. You are so loyal, supporting your driver and team in good times and in bad. You spend your hard earned money going to the races, buying their souvenirs and their sponsors' products. The big thing for the naysayers right now is to point out the empty seats at the track. How many football, basketball or baseball stadiums hold over 100,000 people? Sure, there may be more empty seats than in years past, but folks, the truth of the matter is that we still have more fans showing up every week at the track than any other sport does even if they pack the place. So for that, I am grateful.

I am also grateful for the sponsors that are in our sport and a part of our sport. They spend money supporting the drivers, cars and teams. They spend money on TV and radio commercials. Yes, I know, some of you wish there weren't any commercials, but face the facts that without commercials there wouldn't be any races on TV or radio — it's part of our business. Even in these tough times, I am praying that our sponsors can find ways to remain in our sport.

The auto manufacturers are a big part of what we do and I am praying they get their wheels back under them and they can continue to be involved in NASCAR as they have all these years. That's something I think we should all pray for because I think it could have long lasting effects on what we see every Sunday on the track.

Thanksgiving is a great day and this is a special time of the year. It's a time of rest and reflection plus hopefully for everyone, a chance to get together with friends and family. I pray that God blesses all of you on this special occasion.
